coming up to Halloween

Lots has gone on in October, and I hope you have been able to follow the dates in the previous blog. Between the Thanksgiving holiday and those days off, and the arrival of a new grandson on Oct 16th, my blog has suffered. So - for the rest of this week:
Our word wall has 8 words in total at present - a, is, dad, mom, at, that, or, and for. Please keep going over all of the sounds and letters that make them from the yellow "Sound" duotang. We are just about halfway through our Jolly Phonics program. I am quite pleased with the students' progress. We are beginning to put the sounds we have learned together into words that the children can read, which is exciting.
Today Lisa Williams, from the RCMP, came and gave a talk to students in Grades K-5 about Halloween safety. On Thursday our K-2 classes will go to Mrs. Brown's Grade 3/4 to watch them perform a play they've been practicing. On Friday the Ks will go to the Nursing Home at 10am. They should bring their costumes to put on before we leave the school. Friday afternoon we will have our usual activities in each classroom after lunch, completing the day, and month, with an assembly in the Great Hall.
Next week, on Thursday and Friday, our students will be immunized for the H1N1 virus. Please send back the permission forms, signed yes or no, by this Friday, Oct 30th.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, September has flown past and now we're into October - the month of turkeys and witches....
Kindergarten students are now bringing home "tricky and sight word" bags. Each week there will be two new words added. Please go over these words nightly, as they will help the children better understand some of the intracacies of the English language. Like I tell them - Practice makes perfect!!! This weeks words are a and is. New words that will come home next week are mom and dad.
I'm really pleased with how the children seem to be picking up the sounds we are learning. Keep practicing them each night, as well, please. They should also be practicing making the letters that go with each sound.
Kindergarten classes are going to the Nursing Home on October 30th - costumes included. More info to come on that later in the month.
As for my homeroom - book orders came home this week and are due back to me Tuesday, October 13th. We are also doing both Reading Club (Grades One and Two only until after Christmas) and You and Your World.
Our next K-2 assembly will be at 1:15 on Friday October 30th. You are welcome to attend and see the classes "perform" poems, songs, etc they have learned.
Other October events - weather permitting, there will be an evacuation drill on Wednesday, October 14th. The student body walks to the Anglican Church (K-5), and Central Wesleyan (6-12). Grades K-2 will dismiss from the stone church at the regular time, and Grades 3-12 will walk back to the school to complete their day. If the weather doesn't cooperate the date will be postponed.

Welcome Fall!

Well, here we are in a new season - the year passes so quickly!
This week Kindergarten parents will notice that the homework has gone from one page to two - Language Arts on the front and Math on the back. Keep up the great work! And remember, please, to send the yellow Sounds duotangs back to school every day and homework by Friday. Thank you!
The annual GMCS Terry Fox Run will take place on Friday. K-2 students walk around the school a few times for our part. Please send in a loonie for your student's donation to the cure for cancer.
We have had two fire drills so far this year. We will have four more over the course of the school year as well. We also have evacuation lockdown practices scheduled, which you will hear more about when the time comes.
Have a great week!

WELCOME BACK!!!!!

Well, September is here, and we're all excited to start a new year! I hope each one of you had a great summer and is ready to have a wonderful, exciting, fun year at GMCS!
There are lots! of things coming home in agenda bags this week - for parents as well as students. Book orders are due back to me (homeroom) by this Friday, Sept 11th. Please sign and return the Highlights, Puzzlemania, and Chirp slips asap, yes or no, as I can use these slips to get free items for use in the classroom. Information slips are extremely helpful to us, so please don't miss that one.
The letter in the front of the K Homework duotang will, hopefully, answer some of the questions that you have concerning your child's first year here. As I stated there, please don't hesitate to phone me with any questions or concerns you might have.
We will be having a fire drill on Thursday (weather permitting), and will practice with your children this week so they will be ready for it.
Here's to a GREAT year!!!

TWO MORE WEEKS!!!!!!

School is winding down, and this week we will make two trips. The first trip is to the Grand Manan Museum (just our Kindergarten class) on Wednesday, June 10th. On Thursday June 11th, we will have our annual "Day at the Beach", leaving school at 11:00am for the Anchorage Park. Any family members who would like to join us are more than welcome. Your child will need a bag lunch (two drinks would be a good idea, and one could be water), sunscreen, a towel, a hat, beach toys (labelled with his/her name), and clothes appropriate for the weather that day. If it is raining on Thursday, we will go on Friday. The buses will pick the children up at the Anchorage to return them home at the regular time.
Hope to see you at the Anchorage!

JUNE is here!

Well, only three more weeks of classes and this year is a done deal.... We are still doing lots of work, so please help your child remain focused on school work.
We have completed the list of tricky and sight words, as well as going through the letters of the alphabet. We are doing a lot of review, and this is important to make sure the students remember what we've learned this year.
Mrs. Jones has put a slide show of our Spring Carnival on her blog - please take a minute or two to have a look. We all had a great time!
As well, please keep an eye open in your child's agenda for information re our trip to the Anchorage on the 11th (rain date 12th), and see his/her homework duotang today for a slip about June 16th, when they are to stay home as next year's class is coming for a visit that day.
There will be no more homework, which I'm sure pleases both you and your child.
Have a great week!
