Big week coming up!

This week we will finish covering the alternate spellings for the long vowel sounds as I wrote on last week's blog entry.

Monday we will do two sounds - long o (oa, ow, and o_e), and long u (ue, ew, and u_e).

Tuesday we will do the oy (with "toughy Y") sound.

Wednesday is concert day - cafeteria will be closed and students will eat in classrooms - concert begins at 1:00 pm.

My goal is to, by Chrismas break time, have covered the rest of the sounds: ow and ou, and er, ir, and ur so we will be ready to start going through the alphabet from January to June.

Wednesday, December 22nd is BYOM (bring your own mug) day, for a cup of hot chocolate.

We have Reading Buddies on Mondays (Ms. McQuaid's class) and ever other Friday (Mr. Lee's class), and have been enjoying listening to stories and doing crafts with them.
When there is a half day, I would appreciate your child's attendance at school - we do our most productive work in the mornings, leaving the afternoons for music, Phys Ed, art, etc. When there is a half day, we still do the work for that day - when your child is absent, he or she will miss out. Thanks for helping in this area.

Monday, December 6, 2010

Well, looks like the weather is making this a short week....
This week I will be beginning to cover the alternate spellings for the long vowel sounds: ai, a_e, and ay, ee, and ea, ie, i_e, and igh, and oa, o_e, and ow, leaving the ue and u_e for next week.
New tricky words are all and are.

Monday, November 29, 2010

Another full week ahead...
The sounds we are "doing" this week are ue, er, au/aw, and ar. New words coming home in the sight and tricky words bags are to and do.
I can only ask that you keep on having your child practice his/her words that come home, as well as the sounds in the yellow duotang. The more children practice what we are doing in school, the better they will know it, and their self-confidence will soar!
You can refer to the sheet that came home last week with the topics covered in math in the next few weeks. We are talking about and doing activities concerning the numbers 1-5.
Please, also, remember our World Vision challenge this holiday season, raising money for a mobil health clinic, as well as for warm shoes and clothing for needy children. Thank you in advance for your support.

Friday, November 19, 2010

Thank you to all of the parents who came out for Parent-Teacher Interviews. I appreciate the time to sit and talk about your child with you, and hear your comments, questions and concerns. Please feel free to contact me at any time - your child and his/her education is important to me!

New sounds for the week are qu, ou (as in sound), and oi.

New words for the word wall are be and was.

This week the whole school is focusing on bullying - the identification and the prevention of it. We will talk each day about it - what it looks like, sounds like, etc., and what we can do about it. The grand finale of the week is a K-12 assembly in the gym on Friday afternoon, where there will be a video and other presentations, as well as a whole-school PINK photo! Thanks for your support in this project!

Friday, November 12, 2010

Here we are - the first report cards of the year are coming home Monday, November 15th. Please sign the envelope and return it to me with the sign-up sheet for Parent-Teacher interviews. I have done some testing and will be happy to go over the results with you at either of the sessions.

New sounds for the coming week are x,ch,sh, and th.

New sight and tricky words are me and we.

Because of Parent-Teacher interviews, there is no school for students on Friday, November 19th.

Saturday, November 6, 2010

Well, we've had a couple of full weeks, and now we come to another short one - Thursday is Remembrance Day, so there will be no school on that day. Grades K-12 will have a Remembrance Day service in school on Wednesday afternoon.
This week we are finishing up our next group of sounds - having done z, w, ng, and v, we will finish this group with 00 and OO (00 as in book, and OO as in boot). After the review video on Tuesday, we will start the next group with y. I have emphasized to the students that they need to practice the sounds they've learned without the picture clues - so the half scribbler with the letters alone should be used regularly for practice as well as the big yellow duotang.
New tricky and sight words this week are he and she - this brings our list to: a, at, dad, for, is, I, mom, or, that, the, are, come, said, and do, and these words should be practiced regularly so that your child can feel confident when we begin writing.

Thursday, October 21, 2010

Already October is more than halfway over! Time certainly can fly!
This week we are doing the sound associated with f, b, ai,and j. Our tricky and sight words for this week are at and that, giving our word wall the following words: a, at, dad, is, mom, and that. We also have a tricky word hat with the words are, said and the on it. Please go over these words with your child to help them remember the words - we are beginning to write, and knowing these words well will help give them the confidence to go try new things.
Sounds for next week are oa, ie, ee and or. Tricky and sight words are or and for.
On Tuesday night next week, October 26th, there will be a Halloween Dance Party from 6-7 for K-2 students in the cafeteria. On Friday morning, October 29th, my Kindergarten class will go, in costume, to the Nursing Home. Permission slips for this will come home on Monday (the 25th). That same afternoon (Friday), at 1:20, the K-2 students will have their October assembly in the cafeteria.

Monday, October 4, 2010

a short week....

It will be a long, short week this week. We are covering the "d" sound as well as the "g" sound (as in guest). We are starting our tricky and sight words, which will come home today for the first. The words this week are a and is. Please review the words with your child a few times throughout the week, and return the bag with the homework duotang on Wednesday.

As well, magazine order envelopes are coming home this week. Students in elementary school are not allowed to go door-to-door, but parents may share the catalog with family and friends if they want to. The elementary students are able to collect the "prizes" for bringing in subscriptions.

We will be having our evacuation practice tomorrow, Tuesday, October 5th - same as last week - regular dismissal time, but the children will be picked up at the Anglican Church in Grand Harbour instead of the school. 3-12 students will return to school and be dismissed from there at the regular times.

Kindergarten will be visiting the Fire Station on Wednesday morning, shortly after 9 (probablyl around 9:15). If you put your name down to help you could meet us there. Thanks for your help. The children always love this trip.

Thursday, September 30, 2010

A little late this week, but I'll do this week and next now......
Today is our annual Terry Fox run - thank you for the donations that you have sent in to the cause. Tomorrow (depending on the weather) is our first evacuation drill. Students will return home at usual times, but K-2 students will be picked up by the buses at the Anglican Church in Grand Harbour. 3-12 students will walk back to school and have their last class before the buses come back to pick them up.
We have done the following sounds this week (not naming the letters, as we will concentrate on learning the names of the letters after the sounds are all learned - after Christmas): e (as in egg), , h, r, and m.
Tomorrow is the first of October, and here is what's happening in that month here at school: I'm in the process of setting up a visit to the fire station for next week as it is Fire Prevention Week. I'm also setting up a visit to the Nursing Home in costume for the 29th for Halloween. Further information will follow.Also in October - no school for students on October 7 and 8, as these are teacher meeting days. Thanksgiving holiday is on October 11th this year.
As well, we will be starting to send home tricky word bags in October, each week adding two new words to read, reread, and learn to reccognize.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

We're well into the year now, and I believe all of the students are settling in well.
This week we are continuing our Jolly Phonics sounds with "p" and "n". On Wednesday we will see a video reviewing the first six sounds we've learned. On Thursday we will begin learning the second group of six sounds.There is a 1/2 scribbler coming home with just the letters in that we've covered. Please use this to review the sounds, without the pictures to give clues to your child. We will continue to use these two books throughout the Fall, ending just before Christmas.
Homework seems to me to be going well - if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

* Wed, Sept 22nd - early dismissal (11:00 for Grades 3-12, and 11:40 for
Grades K-2)
* Monday, September 27th - individual pictures, 9:00am
* Tuesday, September 28th - group picture, 9:05am

Not too much extra is going on this week - I am seeing the results of the time change in the students - very tired today....
Please remember that there is always a cool (usually COLD) breeze blowing in the playground, and your child will need hat and mitts, if not snow pants (they do an excellent job of blocking the wind).
Reading Clubs have started again, so ask your child what happened there today!

February Frolics!

noteworthy dates in February -
* 12 - Valentine exchange in homerooms in afternoon
* 17 - Happy Birthday, Zack!
* 19 - Day 100 - pending any snow days between now and then
* 26 - Happy Birthday, Jasenda.

This week we are "doing" the letter Ee. The new word wall words are so, my, and love.

The Kindergarten students are enjoying being part of Reading Club. Rememer to check their RC bags on Monday and Tuesday nights for books to be read, work in duotang to see, etc.

Guided Reading bags and logs will come home this week. Your child should read his/her story and make an entry in the log book each night. Send the bag and its contents every day, and he/she can get a new book. When your child has recorded 50 books read he/she can pick a book to keep from a collection I have here at school - a good incentive to read!

Monday, January 25, 2010

It's the last week of January!

This week we are talking about the letter "D". As well, tricky/sight words coming home with homework are no, go, yes, and see.

We are beginning a new Reading Club today, this time with the Kindergarten students included. Reading Club books and duotangs will be coming home. Please read the book with your child and check to see if there is work to do in the duotang. The students should also be bringing books home each night to read, log, and return the next day. This will start with my K class tomorrow.

The whole school is doing a money collection for earthquake relief for Haiti. We are asking that each child bring in $5.00 - other money is welcome as well. This is in relation to the letter that was sent home on Friday. Thank you in advance for your help in this venture.

PLEASE send snow pants, boots, mittens, and hats EVERY DAY with your child. There were lots of children outside today without snow pants. The playground is cold and windy - even if you think we might not be going out - if the clothes are in the backpack they can be worn or not. If they're not there, they can't be worn.....

Monday, January 11, 2010

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Welcome to the frigid North!! Remember to bundle your children up well this week, as temperatures are low -- hats, mitts, snowpants, jackets, and boots will fit the bill for sure.
New words for the week are said, it, and here. It is important to keep practicing all of the words that have been sent home - we all know practice
makes perfect!
We are putting emphasis on the letter Bb as well this week, and I appreciate you parents who are helping their child to fill the Alphabet Bucket.
Hope you all have a great week!

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

WELCOME BACK!!!!!

Well, here we are in January and ready to start the short haul until June!
We have completed the Jolly Phonics program and will now be "doing" a letter of the alphabet each week. Students will be taking turns bringing the "Alphabet Bucket" home to put items in beginning with the letter of the week - this week we are talking about Aa. Once again I thank you for your support and involvement in your child's education.
Our word wall words for this week are as, come and some. We will also be writing more and more, and the children will be able to use the sounds they have learned to form words and sentences.
We have received letters from World Vision and Trevor O'Neill, thanking us for our gifts of money for books and small toys for the children in Afghanistan. It is a good thing to make children aware that there are children around the world who aren't a fortunate as they are.
